Ariel Atom Exclusive by Inside Line

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE 2005 ARIEL ATOM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=131557 Think about the quickest road car you've ever driven. No, wait, scratch that. Think about the quickest road car you've ever heard of. No, wait. That won't do, either. Think about the quickest road car that's ever been. That's more like it. Now you're in the right area code. Here's why: This highly modified 2005 Ariel Atom with its supercharged, 375-horsepower, 2.0-liter Honda engine hits 60 mph from a standstill in 2.8 seconds. Two-point-eight seconds! With an exclamation point! (And we never use an exclamation point.) Measure its time to 60 mph with 1 foot of rollout like they do on a drag strip, and the Ariel gets to the mark in a scant 2.6 seconds — less time than we require to decide between paper and plastic. For those of you keeping score at home, this makes this 2005 Ariel Atom quicker than any car we've ever tested — any Porsche, any Viper, any Vette and any other specialty marque like the Noble M400. But it gets better. The little Atom goes on to further embarrass the big names by punching its way through the quarter-mile in 10.6 seconds at 128.4 mph. It's the hardest accelerating car we've ever driven.

2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 vs. 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR

FIND OUT WHO WINDS, ZO6 OR GT500KR: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=131034 We're looking at the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR and 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, but we're imagining a '68 Shelby GT500KR staging next to a Corvette with one of the 427-cubic-inch V8s on the Connecting Highway in Queens, New York, probably sometime during the Nixon administration. We don't know how the cars are tuned or which driver has the better hole-shot technique, but we're calling our street race in favor of the Vette. You see, there's no historical basis for a close Corvette-Mustang rivalry. A Corvette of any year is a little too fast and smart to be street racing ratty muscle cars. It's a real sports car, the kind of car that's still fun when you start going around corners. But maybe it's a different story with this 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR and 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Each of these rear-wheel-drive coupes has a V8 rated for more than 500 horsepower at the flywheel. And with the release of the limited-edition 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, Ford has moved in on Chevrolet's price territory. The GT500KR leaves the Ford factory as a $46,730 GT500 coupe and is shipped as a rolling chassis to Carroll Shelby's facility near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada. By the time the KR cruises out of Shelby's shop, it's an $82,395 Mustang. As such, the King-of-the-Road Mustang must now contend with this $76,920 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. And though the Z06 is a few horsepower shy of the upcoming ZR1, it's not an easy mark. The GT500KR will have to play like a sports car just to keep up.

FOR MORE ABOUT THE JAGUAR XF-R: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=130969 After seeing prototypes running around England, we figured it was only a matter of time before we would catch up with the 2010 Jaguar XF-R in Death Valley. Running solo in a new shade of silver, this high-performance version of the standard XF sedan is designed to give Jaguar a true super sedan to compete with the likes of the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. This latest XF-R prototype wears many of the same upgrades as the earlier test mules. The deeper airdam up front is the most obvious upgrade, as the air intakes appear slightly larger than those on the standard model. It also looks like a pair of hood intakes have been added as well. There are new, more aggressive rocker-sill extensions as well, although the wheels appear to be the same set of optional 20-inch items available for the standard XF. In back, a set of quad tailpipes is another obvious tip-off to this XF's high-performance engine hardware. So what's under the hood? All indications point toward a new supercharged 5.0-liter V8. It's an all-new engine that will filter down to the entire Jaguar lineup in one form or another, not to mention Land Rover's upcoming SUVs. In the XF-R, it will likely produce around 500 horsepower, a number that will put it right in line with the rest of the luxury super-sedan crowd. Expect to see the official debut of the 2010 Jaguar XF-R early next year, with sales beginning by the spring of 2009.

So naturally, the first thing I want to do when I jump behind the wheel is a big American smoky burnout. "Not here," says Pete Gladysz, the Dodge guy babysitting our test car and riding shotgun, as he looks around the leafy, tranquil residential street we're on in the middle of Pasadena. "Wait 'till we get to the track." Gladysz, powertrain senior manager for Chrysler LLC's SRT Group, sounds serious. So I wait.

SEE MORE ABOUT THE 2010 CHEVY CAMARO: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=131090 It feels good to be on the other side. Recently, we got a chance to pilot a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro V6 Prototype out on the public highways and byways of southeastern Michigan. Typically, we're on the other side of this game, pestering development engineers and posting spy shots of some car just like these engineering prototypes of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro V6. Heck, as far as we know, we might have run pictures of one or both of these very automobiles. Yes, these two bits of spy bait still had matte-black camouflage panels (one with triangles made of what looked like white shoe polish), ill-fitting bumper covers, no Chevy bowtie and a bunch of small makeshift headlight elements, all of which taken collectively look a little bit like a rash. But what do we care? We're driving the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro!

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE 2009 DODGE CHALLENGER SE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=130810 ENGLISHTOWN, New Jersey — The 2009 Dodge Challenger SE is the new, affordable addition to the 2009 Dodge Challenger lineup. Following the official introduction of the 2009 Dodge Challenger SE at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey, we conducted our own independent testing of the entry-level coupe with its 250-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. The business case for the Dodge Challenger depends on volume sales, not just specialty cars like the 425-hp SRT8 model, and Chrysler believes the Challenger SE can become a mainstream coupe, a two-door alternative to the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans. This is the very first chance to test the performance of Chrysler's new muscle car with the V6 engine. The data includes 0-60-mph acceleration, quarter-mile performance, braking distance and slalom speed, as well as insight from IL's test driver. Chrysler based its introduction of the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8, R/T and SE at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, a traditional stop for the NHRA's professional drag-racing championship. Thanks to our portable Racelogic VBOX III testing gear, we were able to use the track for performance testing, although the lack of a suitable plot of pavement precluded skid pad evaluation. The 2009 Dodge Challenger SE with its 250-hp 3.5-liter V6 and four-speed automatic transmission accelerated to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds (7.8 seconds with 1 foot of rollout), then reached the quarter-mile in 16.1 seconds at 88.3 mph.

MORE ABOUT THE 2009 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=130955 The 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T wants to come home almost as badly as we do. We're cranking along I-80 West on our way from suburban New York to Detroit — to Woodward Avenue, in fact. We're hauling up on the dudes in Hyundais and swerving around RSXs. These people are looking at us like we've got lobsters crawling out of our eye sockets. This isn't the Challenger's bag, man. This modern-day muscle/pony car might be constructed in a plant near Toronto, but it will always be "from Detroit." And no location in Detroit will ever be quite as friendly to the Challenger as Woodward Avenue — particularly during the traditional Dream Cruise in mid-August. This unwieldy, non-organized, traffic-snarled, oldies-blaring orgy of angry exhaust and gasoline stench is the Challenger's turf. Here, fart-can-exhaust Civic owners meet flat-black retro-rod rockabilly dudes, who meet hyperaggressive Camaro-driving burnouts, who meet fat old men with their poodle-skirt-wearing wives, who meet non-automotive-related standard-issue freak shows in aluminum foil hats and carrying half-full trash bags. It's a mess. But everyone seems to dig the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T.

DOES PORSCHE GET IT RIGHT WITH THE PANAMERA? FIND OUT AT: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=130326?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..3.* Our spy shooters have caught the 2010 Porsche Panamera once again, this time during some hot-weather testing in Death Valley, California. And once again, the upcoming four-door Porsche has left us scratching our heads over its design. Incorporating elements from both the 911 and the Cayenne, the Panamera looks like it's having a hard time pulling off the whole "four-door coupe" idea. The high window line makes it look bulky in profile, while the massive hatchback window does little to slim down the big rear end. We'll assume for now that the car will look far more elegant when all the tape comes off, but for now the Panamera looks like it could take over from the Cayenne as the least attractive Porsche in the Stuttgart company's lineup. Three direct-injection gasoline engines are expected to be offered from the start of North American sales, which now look likely to begin in late 2009. At the bottom end of the scale will be a 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 sourced from Volkswagen. Positioned above that will be the Panamera S, with a Porsche-developed 4.8-liter V8 that makes 405 hp. Rounding out the lineup will be the Panamera Turbo, challenging the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG with a turbocharged 520-hp 4.8-liter V8. Porsche has also confirmed it will add a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the Panamera to its lineup in 2010. It is expected to receive an adapted version of the full parallel-hybrid system that Porsche is developing in cooperation with Volkswagen for the second-generation Cayenne and Touareg. Average fuel economy, Porsche claims, will top 25 mpg. The entry-level V6 is expected to be sold exclusively in rear-wheel-drive guise. The V8-powered models are set to have an adapted version of the Cayenne's Haldex-style four-wheel-drive system with multiplate clutch. Among the gearbox choices will be a standard six-speed manual and an optional six-speed automatic. Prices in Europe are expected to start at around $125,000 for the Panamera V6, ranging up to $195,000 for the Panamera Turbo. Sticker prices on the U.S. models could be slightly lower when it goes on sale in late 2009.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE 2009 CORVETTE ZR1: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=130931 Possibly the only thing more surprising than the existence of a $100,000-plus, 638-horsepower factory-built Corvette is that the car is a total pussycat. Don't get us wrong, this 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 can kill you quite completely dead. We mean like augured-in, test-pilot kind of beyond-recognition dead. It is capable of such stunning velocity in such a short distance that if things go wrong at even a fraction of its ultimate speed, it'll tear a ragged hole in just about whatever it encounters. This ZR1 produces 638 hp — the equivalent of the power produced by the 405-hp 1995 Corvette ZR-1 (the "King of the Hill Corvette") plus a 1984 Corvette plus a 1968 Citroën 2CV. Or think of it this way. If you bolted three 1980s-era Corvette L83 small blocks end to end to end to produce a single V24 engine, it would still produce 23 hp fewer than the ZR1's supercharged LS9 V8. For perspective, the total power received by the earth from the sun is considerably higher at 174.0 petawatts (1015 watts) or 233,334,000,000,000 hp*. But for all its badass credentials, its power output of a hydroelectric dam and its stunning production-car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the ZR1 doesn't really seem to want to kill you all that bad. What do you think this is, a freakin' Dodge Viper or something? That widowmaker is right now sitting in a nearby parking lot plotting ways to turn you into freshly chopped liver — liver that it will then fry to a savory firmness right there on its exhaust-heated rocker panels.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI Spec C Debuts @ the Nürburgring

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE 2010 SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI SPEC C: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=130147?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..1.* If the number of letters in its name is at all proportionate with its level of improvements, the 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Spec C should be quite the hatchback. Spotted for the first time lapping the Nürburgring recently, this super STI has a number of upgrades designed to sharpen the performance of the standard model. According to sources in Japan, this STI's ride height has been lowered by 0.5 inch and fitted with stiffer dampers and springs. The lightweight 18-inch wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone run-flat tires, while the brakes have been upgraded with the six-piston calipers from the Subaru Legacy STi S402. Finally, the engineers in Subaru City have tweaked the turbocharger and exhaust system of the turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer engine to generate beefier torque at lower revs and lift power from 300 horsepower to around 320 hp. Gear ratios have also been revised, with 1st through 4th gears positioned closer together while 5th and 6th gear have been made taller to enhance top-end speed, as the Spec C is expected to clear 165 mph. With the performance hardware of the Spec C out of the way, the design team turned to aerodynamics in order to add a little free horsepower. One source close to the project tells us that in addition to giving the Spec C a fully flat underbody, the Subaru engineers have also fitted a lightweight aluminum rear diffuser that helps generate twice as much downforce at speed than the current body. No 'Ring lap times are available yet, but our snapper in Germany confirms that the Spec C appeared more composed through low- and high-speed corners and could easily slice 15 seconds off the current STI's time. Expected to go on sale in Japan by year's end and then in Europe and possibly in the U.S. by mid-2009, the Spec C could have a price tag of around $43,000.

Dodge Challenger SRT8 - Exclusive Performance Test

CHECK OUT THE 2009 CHALLENGER SRT8 PERFORMANCE TEST: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=130809 ENGLISHTOWN, New Jersey — Following the official introduction of the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey, we conducted our own independent testing of the 425-horsepower coupe, now available with a six-speed manual transmission for the new model year. This is the very first chance to test the performance of Chrysler's new muscle car with the combination of the SRT 6.1-liter Hemi V8 and the Tremec six-speed manual transmission. The data includes 0-60-mph acceleration, quarter-mile performance, braking distance and slalom speed, as well as insight from IL's test driver. Chrysler based its introduction of the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8, RT and SE at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, a traditional stop for the NHRA's professional drag-racing championship. Thanks to our portable Racelogic VBOX III testing gear, we were able to use the track for performance testing, although the lack of a suitable plot of pavement precluded skid pad evaluation. The 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 with its 425-hp 6.1-liter V8 and six-speed manual transmission accelerated to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds (5.2 seconds with 1 foot of rollout), then reached the quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds at 103.0 mph. This compares to the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 with its five-speed automatic that achieved 60 mph in 5.1 seconds (4.8 seconds with 1 foot of rollout) and completed the quarter-mile in 13.2 seconds at 107.5 mph. We're surprised that the 2008 Challenger SRT8 with its automatic transmission has the edge in speed here, but we were slightly suspicious at the time that it had an unusually healthy engine. In comparison, the engine of this 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 with its manual transmission seemed slightly sick during our testing. In the end, we're still left with some questions about the comparative performance of automatic and manual transmissions in this car.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE 2009 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=130808 ENGLISHTOWN, New Jersey — There has been lots of speculation about the speed of the new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T with its 375-horsepower 5.7-liter V8, and we were able to conduct our own independent testing at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey, the site of the official introduction of the 2009 Dodge Challenger lineup. This is the very first chance to test the performance of Chrysler's new muscle car in R/T trim. Our data includes 0-60-mph acceleration, quarter-mile performance, braking distance and slalom speed, as well as insight from IL's test-driver. The 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T with its 375-hp 5.7-liter V8 and six-speed manual transmission accelerated to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds (5.5 seconds with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip), then reached the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 100.8 mph. In comparison, the 315-hp 2008 Mustang Bullitt we tested late last year with a 4.6-liter V8 and Tremec five-speed manual transmission ran to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. The Bullitt also ran a 13.8-second quarter-mile at 102.1 mph. At 4,041 pounds, the R/T weighs about 100 pounds less than a 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 with a six-speed transmission. In fact the R/T is only fractionally slower to 60 mph than the SRT8's 5.5 seconds (5.2 seconds with 1 foot of rollout). The difference lies in the higher redline of the SRT8's 425-hp 6.1-liter Hemi, which enables the car to pull past 60 mph in 2nd gear. In comparison, the R/T requires a shift into 3rd gear.

CHECK OUT EXCLUSIVE 2010 CHEVROLET CRUZE SPY VIDEO: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=130017?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..2.* Now that smaller cars are back in style, General Motors is working hard to make sure that its next economy sedan can compete with Japan's finest. How else would you explain the presence of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze on the Nürburgring? An all-new chassis is probably the main reason why the Chevrolet Cruze is undergoing such heavy development testing. Dubbed Delta 2, the new platform is expected to filter down to several other GM products like the Chevrolet HHR and Opel Zafira. It remains front-wheel drive and from what we're told, it will feature a torsion-beam axle in back to keep down costs. That's a shame, really, as both Ford and Honda have figured out how to put independent suspensions in their compact sedans without breaking the bank. Of course, Chevrolet's engineers claim that the Cruze will ride and handle every bit as well as a Civic, Focus or Mazda 3. We'll see about that. In Europe, the Chevy Cruze will be offered with a choice of four-cylinder gas and diesel engines. For the U.S. market, GM intends to fit a turbocharged, direct-injection 1.4-liter that will deliver up to 40 mpg in highway driving. We presume that number is for models equipped with a manual transmission. Hopefully Chevrolet will find a way to specify a six-speed automatic for those who don't want to do their own shifting, but given the cost reductions found elsewhere, don't count on it. A replacement for the current Cobalt compact, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is scheduled to be unveiled this October at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. The Cruze will go on sale in Europe in spring 2009, but U.S. sales won't begin until mid-2010.

If someone tossed you the keys to a spanking-new 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI for the weekend, you'd make a beeline for the nearest winding road leading into the mountains. So would we. But would you also bring along your wife, two kids and mother-in-law, all prone to carsickness? Not if you could avoid it. But we couldn't. Such is married life. Besides, Mom was the one with keys to the cabin. Normally, the mere sight of an old-school STI or Evo complete with a boy-racer wing would have been enough to elicit a Pavlovian response from this bunch, with the gut-churning getting into high gear even before we reverse out of the driveway — but such was not the case this time. Because the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI is based on a sensible wagon-esque five-door hatchback body instead of a sedan, it somehow managed to slide under the radar of civilians. Good thing, since this revised, turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-4 engine puts out 305 horsepower and it makes the 2008 STI go like stink.
