Christmas Trees of the World and Celine and NanaChristmas Trees of the World While Celine & Nana sing Petit Papa Noël Before the ball drops in Times Square, the Big Apple turns on its holiday charm with the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. The Capitol Christmas tree in Washington, D.C., is decorated with 3,000 ornaments that are the handiwork of U.S. schoolchildren. Encircling evergreens in the 'Pathway of Peace' represent the 50 U.S. states. The world's largest Christmas tree display rises up the slopes of Monte Ingino outside of Gubbio, in Italy's Umbria region. Composed of about 500 lights connected by 40,000 feet of wire, the 'tree' is a modern marvel for an ancient city. A Christmas tree befitting Tokyo's nighttime neon display is projected onto the exterior of the Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka. Illuminating the Gothic facades of Prague's Old Town Square, and casting its glow over the manger display of the famous Christmas market, is a grand tree cut in the Sumava mountains in the southern Czech Republic. Venice 's Murano Island renowned throughout the world for its quality glasswork is home to the tallest glass tree in the world. Sculpted by master glass blower Simone Cenedese, the artistic Christmas tree is a modern reflection of the holiday season. Moscow celebrates Christmas according to the Russian Orthodox calendar on Jan. 7. For weeks beforehand, the city is alive with festivities in anticipation of Father Frost's arrival on his magical troika with the Snow Maiden. He and his helper deliver gifts under the New Year tree, or yolka, which is traditionally a fir. The largest Christmas tree in Europe (more than 230 feet tall) can be found in the Praça do Comércio in Lisbon, Portugal. Thousands of lights adorn the tree, adding to the special enchantment of the city during the holiday season. 'Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree': Even in its humblest attire, aglow beside a tiny chapel in Germany's Karwendel mountains, a Christmas tree is a wondrous sight. Ooh la la Galeries Lafayette! In Paris, even the Christmas trees are chic. With its monumental, baroque dome, plus 10 stories of lights and high fashion, it's no surprise this show-stopping department store draws more visitors than the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. In addition to the Vatican's heavenly evergreen, St. Peter's Square in Rome hosts a larger-than-life nativity scene in front of the obelisk. The Christmas tree that greets revelers at the Puerta del Sol is dressed for a party. Madrid's two-week celebration makes millionaires along with merrymakers. On Dec. 22, a lucky citizen will win El Gordo (the fat one), the world's biggest lottery. A token of gratitude for Britain's aid during World War II, the Christmas tree in London's Trafalgar Square has been the annual gift of the people of Norway since 1947. Drink a glass of gluhwein from the holiday market at the Romer Frankfurt's city hall since 1405 and enjoy a taste of Christmas past. Against a backdrop of tall, shadowy firs, a rainbow trio of Christmas trees lights up the night (location unknown). ================================ Tagovi: Christmas Trees Glenmed |

"Gott! Welch Dunkel hier!" Fidelio: Alfred Piccaver 19281928 Recording of Florestan's Prison Aria from Beethoven's Fidelio. Alfred Piccaver was English by birth and became American when his parents emigrated. He was sent to study in Prague, was contracted to sing there and stayed. He eventually sang in Vienna and became one of the most celebrated tenors there prior to the 1st world war and during the inter-war years. Puccini described him as his ideal Rodolpho. Upon Austria's annexation with Germany in 1937 Piccaver left for Britain (as did his contemporary Richard Tauber) and made appearances here. After the war he returned to Vienna for the re-opening of the Vienna State Opera House in 1955 and decided to stay. He died in his favourite city on 23rd September 1958. He was given a state funeral by the Austrian government and was interred in the Zentralfriedhof of Vienna. As an interesting footnote, his great rendition of "There'll always be an England" is sung it with a discernible Austrian accent!! Elisabeth Schwarzkopf: Vedrai Carino (Don Giovanni)1952 Philharmonia John Pritchard. Part of this sounds to me so much like Victoria de los Angeles. I had to be advised by a couple of experts before I was sure! Thanks to Jackie and Robert. After Masetto has been beaten up by Don Giovanni (who is disguised as Leporello), Zerlina finds him and asks what happened. He replies that Leporello beat him up. Zerlina promises to soothe his wounds with her love. Tagovi: Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Vedrai Carino Don Giovanni Zerlina Mozart Glenmed |

Regine Crespin: Je vais mourir (Les Troyens - Berlioz)Regine Crespin - One of the great voices - in French and in much more. Je vais mourir, Didon's aria from Les Troyens 1965 Pretre. Ah! Je vais mourir... Dans ma douleur immense submergée... Et mourir non vengée! Mourons, pourtant! Oui, puisse-t-il frémir A la lueur lointaine de la flamme de mon bûcher. S'il reste dans son âme quelque chose d'humain, Peut-être il pleurera sur mon affreux destin! Lui, me pleurer! Alexander Kipnis is Sarastro (The Magic Flute)The translation tries to sound nice in English and is not word-for-word. O Isis and Osiris, send forth Your wisdom's light to this new pair. There to guide the wand'rers footsteps, Grant them strength when dangers near. Let their ordeal for them be fruitful, But if perchance their doom they meet, Reward their virtue and their valour, Receive them at thy heavenly seat. Not easy to put on a successful Magic Flute! Who will you get to sing the hardest and highest soprano aria (QOTN) and the here the most satisfying low Basso notes? Gerald Moore and Kipnis were colleagues on the concert platform for many years and became good friends. Gerald wrote that "Sasha's" musicality was second to none in his era. Florence Austral: Christe Eleison (Sullivan)1927 recording. Florence Austral comes chronologically between Nellie Melba and Joan Sutherland as the most famous Australian sopranos. I must say that I've played this a dozen times while making the video and each time I love the voice more as it soars with power and great beauty above the chorus. It is not surprising that she was an admired Brunnhilde. The Cantata "The Golden Legend", composed by Sir Arthur Sullivan, was premiered at Leeds Victoria Hall in 1886 and was a resounding success. Those with an interest in Dame Clara Butt may know that it was in this work that she made her professional debut. This was at the Albert Hall, no less! in 1892 when she was 20. She sang the contralto part of Ursula while Florence here 35 years later is Ursula's daughter, the soprano Elsie. These are the full words of "The night is calm and cloudless". But only the asterixed lines are sung here. "Christe Eleison" is liturgical Greek "Lord Have Mercy". *The night is calm and cloudless, *And still as still can be, *The stars come forth to listen *To the music of the sea. They gather, and gather, and gather, Until they crowd the sky, And listen, in breathless silence, To the solemn litany. It begins in rocky caverns, As a voice that chaunts alone To the pedals of the organ In monotonous undertone; And anon from shelving beaches, And shallow sands beyond. *In snow-white robes uprising *The ghostly choirs respond. *And sadly and unceasing *The mournful voice sings on, *And snow-white choirs still answer *Christe eleison! Fritz Wunderlich : Ein Jüngling liebt ein MädchenDichterliebe No.11 Robert Schumann Don't you just love Heinrich Heine's lyrics! A young man loves a maiden, She chose another instead; But this man loves another girl, And this one he has wed. The maiden in her anger, Will take the next young lad That wanders past her window; Our first young man goes mad. It is the old, old story, Yet stays for ever true; The lad to whom it happens, His heart will break in two. Tagovi: Wunderlich Schumann Dichterliebe Ein Jüngling liebt ein Mädchen |

Sumi Jo: Send in the Clowns (Stephen Sondheim)Stephen Sondheim wrote a musical "A little night music" in 1973. It contained this song which became a hit for Judy Collins. I have Frank Sinatra's and Sumi Jo's renditions which are equal favourites with me. I've uploaded this as an example of Sumi Jo's crossover versatility. The lyrics are sheer poetry and, if you listen carefully, you will hear that the music is in waltz 3/4 time - a rarity for a popular song. I'm adding here in its entirety the commentary by "Greykeys88". I'm very grateful for his knowledgeable contribution: "Sumi Jo is pretty fantastic, she sings this song with such beautiful vocal line. Her attention to detail is amazing, especially on the line 'isn't it bliss'. I might just add that line at 2:01 is 'my fault, I fear'. Also, the song isn't in 3/4, it actually alternated between 9/8 and 12/8. Which means sometimes it has 3 pulses and sometimes it has 4 pulses. However you're right that is does evoke a waltz feel because each pulse is divided into three. Sondheim, gotta love him, never makes it easy" Tagovi: Sumi Jo Send Clowns Stephen Sondheim Sinatra Glenmed |
