In the PC game System Shock 2, you play as a soldier taken out of stasis on board the spaceship Von Braun. The game has a very creepy and scary atmosphere as you fight your way through the numerous enemies. This is the games shining moment, and is easily one of the most shocking moments in all of gaming.

System Shock 2 Mod Comparison

If you've never tried System Shock 2, I highly recommend that you do so, especially if you played and enjoyed BioShock (this is an earlier game by the same developers). Unfortunately, a lot of people have trouble playing System Shock 2 because of the primitive graphics. Players are put off by muddy textures and very low-poly models that give people in the game triangle faces and dolphin feet. This is a real shame because System Shock 2 is one of the best games ever made. Fortunately, System Shock 2 has a very devoted fanbase that is dedicated to continually improving the game. So now you can mod it to remove its worst offenses without impacting the great gameplay one bit. This video demonstrates the three mods that I regularly use: 1. System Shock 2 Rebirth http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,8.0.html This mod increases the poly count of the models and improves their texturing. Suddenly people look like people! 2. The Shock Texture Upgrade Project http://shtup.home.att.net/ Or SHTUP for short. This mod improves the textures of many in-game surfaces. Now you can actually read the monitors! 3. DeepFriedBeer's Sound Upgrade for System Shock 2 http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,27.new.html This mod replaces many sounds in the game (including all the weapon sounds) with higher-quality, more realistic versions. System Shock 2 - Navy Hacker

System Shock 2 is one of the more engrossing games ever made. Even tho it suffers from Old Graphics Ugh, it's still intense and scary, mainly because everything is so hostile, and enemies LOVE to pop out randomly whenever they want. Add to this that all actions including inventory management, repairs, modifications, hacking, ANYTHING is done real time. Will the Navy Hacker survive this rather grim situation, when things get out of hand?

Forgotten Gaming: System Shock 2

Well, maybe not forgotten. Unless you are a total noob to gaming that thinks Bioshock is the end all, be all of RPG/FPS hybrids. Sadly, many think it "started" this sub-genre. It did not. The first System Shock did...but the 2nd one really refined it. By far one of the deepest, scariest, most brilliantly designed games ever made and my 3rd favorite game of all time After Daggerfall and NOLF2. For years I've had an internal struggle going between this and Deus Ex. It's a hard choice to make, but no matter what, you have to give System Shock 2 credit for being one scary piece of gaming software. I'm sure this video gives you an idea, especially during the security alert when the "many" talk to me in their mind. I bought System Shock 2 when it came out, sometime in the fall of 1999. I had problems playing it at night and would, if going downstairs for a drink during a break, take a flashlight with me. It was, without a doubt, an INCREDIBLY frightening game. Much of what made this game unique was stripped away and left out of Bioshock. While Bioshock was fun, it was incredibly shallow. I must have spent two hours in that game trying to open my inventory, only to eventually realize it had none. Pathetic. Thanks go to Doomfreak on Xfire for giving me a modified .exe that seemed to finally get this game going on my XP machine.

Here's just a little video from the System Shock demo showing off how well it runs in DOSbox these days. There were some videos of System Shock 2 up here and that game is well known to be trivial to get running in Windows XP, but for whatever reason everyone thinks that you need to go through about a million steps to get this sucker working. Surprise surprise, it only takes minimal configuration and a decent PC :)
