The motor is simply a neodymium magnet and a AA battery. I used 20 gauge copper wire from home depot plumbing to form the coil, because it is springier than electrical wire. If you try this, please be aware that the spring wire can heat up if the energy doesn't go into bouncing or rotating...oweee on the fingers then if you pick up by the top of the wire! Homopolar Roller- Fun With MagnetsDecided to try this after seeing a few videos here on YouTube.. I need stronger & larger diameter magnets but the battery acts as the roller in this case instead of the magnets. All you need is (1) AA Battery and Earth magents on each end. The magnets must be attached to the battery so that two "like poles" face each other. Place a piece of wire, bent in such a way that it makes contact with the magnets on each end and watch it roll... The ring magnet are set up so that the magnetic field is vertical; the current enters the magnet through the upper side of the sphere magnet ant exits through the peripheral side of the ring magnet. When the current flows trough the radius of the ring magnet, it is almost perpendicular to the magnetic field and the resulting Lorenz force is tangential. This causes the rotation of the magnet. Once the magnet have been set in motion, the rotation continues for a long time, as there is almost no drag. This device could reach very high speeds, but it has to be very well equilibrated. Three-part homopolar motorThe motor consists of three parts only. A cylinderical neodymium magnet, a AA-battery, and a solid copper wire bent roughly into the shape of the letter M. On dropping the wire onto the top of the battery, since its lower ends touch the magnet, this completes the circuit and causes current to flow. As the current-carrying wire is now in the presence of an external magnetic field, a magnetic force acts on it. Since the wire is free to rotate, it begins to spin quite rapidly.
