AtheistAtheists aren't that bad. This is NOT an argument for atheism... It's a defense of atheists. This video received the award for "Excellence in Humanist Communications" from the Harvard University Humanist Chaplaincy. James Randi said this video was "very cool!" Michael Shermer said it was "very impressive." Penn & Teller said, "If a god existed, this video would make him wish he were dead." Dan Barker (author of "Losing Faith in Faith") said it was "very creative and powerful" and that it "makes a GREAT point!" Greg Epstein (the Humanist Chaplain of Harvard University) said "it's a wonderful video!" Stephen Ulh (author of "Imagine No Superstition") said that this video was "just wonderful for the cause of atheism." David Mills (author of "Atheist Universe") said "I am absolutely addicted to watching this fabulous video, which has almost instantly become a legend in the freethought community. Zak has created the most intellectually and emotionally powerful multimedia presentation I've ever seen endorsing the atheist position. This is a proud moment for all rational-minded people. Atheist books can have wide-reaching influence, but I strongly suspect that Zak's video will influence a much larger audience than any atheist book ever published. The first few times I watched this video, I literally had tears in my eyes by the end. The artistic talent and technical skills required to write and produce this video -- as well as its core message -- have made Zachary Kroger my newest freethought hero. I'm not surprised at the HUGE reaction Zak's video has generated." This video (among others) was also mentioned in the November 4th New York Times article "God and Man on YouTube." Nobelief.com said this was "the best video of 2006." NOTE- It has been brought to my attention that Marlon Brando, Mark Twain, and Susan B. Anthony are not atheists. I looked into it, and my original sources were wrong. Sorry. My "conversion" to atheismThis is is short overview of my life as a Christian and why I became an atheist. This is mainly for those religious people who may state that I do not know what I am talking about, or that I have not studied Christianity in any real depth. Yes - I know I was not "born a Christian" and highlight this fact later in the video. For brevity I made that statement instead of "I was born an atheist in a Christian family and raised with the values, rituals, and conventions inherit in such situations". The popular understanding of the phrase has the meaning I was looking for without having to go into a massive explanation as to why everyone is born an atheist. Besides, if I had gone down that route I would now be defending a "I was born an atheist" comment to all the idiot theists who visit. Furthermore, if anyone make a comment about this again I will give you the thumbs down - if you can't be bothered reading the descriptions of videos, it's your own fault. There is a slight problem with the Youtube version - it cuts off one of two closing slides and the credit for the music, which called "High Drama" from the album "Pictures" by Timo Maas. The Rise of Atheism - ABC plus Christopher HitchensSubscribe! - A large convention of atheists gathered today in Virginia, where men, women and children eagerly proclaimed their belief God does not exist. While their views still may be the minority in the country, atheists have become more vocal and visible in recent years. T-shirts, bumper stickers and even rap songs proclaim atheists' beliefs. Atheist summer camps now exist for children. "Over the last 20 years," said Alan Wolfe of Boston College, "the number of people willing to tell people in surveys that they don't believe in God have pretty much doubled." Books denying God's existence have topped bestseller lists, and Congress has its first self-proclaimed atheist, Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif. "A lot of respectable people are coming out and saying they are very happy to dispel the myths of the Bible," said Margaret Downey of Atheist Alliance International. Some atheists said their profile has increased because of a rise in religious extremism, like the Islamic fundamentalism behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 and the rise of the Christian right in the United States. Gathering of the Godless Meanwhile, the Internet has helped unite non-believers. In fact, this weekend's convention sold out, and had a waiting list of 600 people. Besides listening to speakers, convention attendees can buy merchandise like a born-again-atheist hat, atheist-on-board signs for those with kids, or after-the-rapture mints. They also had the opportunity to mingle with celebrity atheists like authors Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins. On "Good Morning America Weekend Edition," Hitchens said American believers should recognize they live in a secular state. "It would be better for them if they didn't give themselves false conciliation," he said. "My challenge is really to say, 'Can you name me a moral action or a statement that has been made by a believer that couldn't have been made by a non-believer?'" And while the stigma associated with atheism may be diminishing, the majority of Americans say they would not vote for an atheist for president.
