House Spider In Cassette BoxThis is probably an ordinary house spider of the sort we get in England. Following discussion (see the comments here), it seems it may be a hobo spider, Tengenaria agrestis. 'Agrestis' means clumsy, not 'aggressive'. I think it's clear enough for an expert to identify it exactly. The palps show up really well. Also, the spinarets are visible at the end of the abdomen. I shook it a little to make it move about but it wasn't too upset by the experience. tench626 left a comment saying that many spiders can be identified from their genitalia and there are diagrams in this book: "The Collins Guide to the Spiders of Britain & Northern Europe" by Mike Roberts. At www.nt.gov.au/health/cdc/bulletin/sept_2005.pdf, there was discussion of this review: Langley, RL; A review of venomous animal bites and stings in pregnant patients. Wilderness and Environmental Medicine. 2004, 15 (3): 207-215. After discussion of the effects of snake venom there was this statement: "The frequency of foetal deaths after other venomous bites or stings is not known." It seems there had been little concern about possible longer-term developmental problems. New pet spiderFound this girl in our living room and decided to keep her, after learning the species (tegenaria agrestis, or hobo spider) i probably shouldn't, but i've already grown attached to watching her feed, just won't let her out (her bite symptoms are almost identical to a brown recluse) if someone gets bit in the up here and believes it was a brown recluse, the culprit was a hobo spider, there are no brown recluse spiders in the pacific northwest, aside from that, i moved in and out/zooming in and out to try and get the sharpest but closest video with my cell phone Tagovi: tegenaria agrestis hobo spider feeding eating cricket |

House Spider In A JugThe link for the freeware flight simulator and fun game, called the Clove Central Flyer, is at the top of this page - http://www.angelfire.com/nb/offarex/ Following the interest there has been in my earlier video, here is another spider found at exactly the same place indoors, in a conservatory. It seems possible that the earlier spider in my collection of videos here may have been a hobo spider, Tegenaria agrestis, and it is very difficult to tell it from other house spiders because of the variation in colouring. Please see the following video also for another view of this one. The eyes of this spider are arrayed like the eyes of both the giant house spider and the hobo spider, as far as I could tell from viewing with a powerful lens and comparison with known examples of the two species shown on the internet. TegenariaFormerly and widely-known as the House Spider/Tegenaria Gigantea, but now classified as Tegenaria Duellica, this is the bad-ass of British spiders . It's venom is weak against most mammals (thank God!) It is the evolutionary sister of the smaller Tegenaria Agrestis - also a UK native, commonly found in fields, but one which has become infamous in the USA as the Hobo Spider, due to its nasty bite. I've always been of the opinion that if all spiders are predatory, (all true biting spiders ARE venomous) if they have big enough chelicerae, with sharp enough points, they will bite. Another House Spider In A Cassette BoxThe link for the freeware flight simulator and fun game, called the Clove Central Flyer, is at the top of this page - http://www.angelfire.com/nb/offarex/ This spider was found in the same place as the earlier spider in a cassette box. That is also viewable in my collection here at YouTube. This one is also in a video immediately preceding this video in my listing. The pattern of round spots on the underside of this spider is typical of the other house spiders, not hobo spiders, but there are exceptions. Its web was spread out over a wide area, not in a funnel shape as is said to be usual for hobo spiders. It has a greater span than is expected for hobos and the patterning on its abdomen seems to be more like the giant house spider, another Tegenaria species. Altogether, it seems that this spider and the other one from a couple of months ago are both giant european house spiders. They are thought never to harm people, even if hobo spiders do, which isn't entirely certain.
