1950’s Scare Film: Road Rage and Aggressive Driving FilmBorrowed Power is a typical driver’s education film meant to scare kids into being cautious and responsible drivers. Jerry Thomas, quarterback of his high school football team and all-around great guy (the classic 1950's perfect young man), turns into a different person when he gets behind the wheel of a car. He drives aggressively, speeds, and generally abuses the “borrowed power” of the car. When he and two friends get hauled into court on suspicion of a hit-and-run in their (now) vintage cars, Jerry gets a lesson in the responsibilities of safe driving from the judge. In a touching showing of loyalty, a parade of friends and family come in to testify about how Jerry is such a great guy. The judge comments to Jerry’s father that Jerry received enough training to be a good pedestrian and bicyclist, but that he needed some more guidance when it came to being a good driver and vehicle safety. Life lessons abound by the end of the film as Jerry begins to understand what a serious matter safe driving is. One of many educational videos to employ scare tactics, Borrowed Power effectively contrasts reckless driving with defensive driving, car safety, and safe driving habits. Fantastically Racist Movie about Diversity! 1950’s RacismWho Are the People of America is a mind blowing classic film from the 1950's that paints America as a utopian land of diversity and happiness. The narrator waxes poetically about how Americans owe many of their favorite things to the rest of the world, including such insignificant things as spaghetti, baseball, music, and hot dogs. The film highlights this diversity by saying, “These are some of the things we share as Americans. For we have become Americans through the process of sharing.” Expressing hope for the future, “Playing together, growing together, learning together…” the narration misses the irony of these words as we see scenes of Southern plantations with slaves working in the fields, and shots of Native Americans, two groups of people who did not “share,” but were instead exploited. This film serves as a shocking exposure to racism in America in the mid 20th century. The great American melting pot was an idea that existed long before different races and cultures became equal in the eyes of the law and the government. 1950's Kid Over Eating Like Crazy! Health and ...This educational film about nutrition opens with youngster Bill sitting down to dinner but not being able to eat because he feels ill. His mother puts him to bed and we see through a food-based nightmare and flashbacks of the day how Bill got himself into this mess. One of many fine examples of gluttony, in the morning he wolfed down his breakfast because he was late for school. Then, he inhaled his lunch at school and afterwards bought junk food to eat with the rest of the week's lunch money. The result is the consequences of bad eating that we saw before. The next day, a reformed Bill sits down to a comically diminished breakfast, with bacon cut up into tiny bits, and juice taken only in tiny sips. Eating a balanced diet is important, as well as knowing nutritional facts. This does the trick, and Bill feels so much better he can go fly kites. This film reveals the way otherwise healthy and well-fed people eat poorly and end up malnourished. This cautionary tale is a good healthy eating guide and an interesting examination of the way dietary nutritional information as thought of in the 1950's.
